I found this useful, but I question some of the shot placements. Some of the pictures showing shot placement on the animal do not correspond with the locations that would be indicated by the pictures showing the animal's anatomy, particularly for shoulder shots, which seem too low.I was also disappointed by the number of photographs: almost all used as examples showed shots for a full side (which the author recommends with good reason) but very few for quartering shots, which are extremely common.I found much more useful the two mini-editions covering North American gameI’ve had lots of practice on white tail, and while many shots get it to the vitals, not all vital shots have equal killing power.Craig shares his experiences on what makes a perfect shot. I had one black bear under my belt but was signed up for a trip for potentially trophy class bear. The location I’d be hunting was thick and tight, so very close range. I got this book to aid in mental preparation. Really a nice book to get you across the learning curve faster. BTW, practice shooting both hands. Sometimes the perfect shot is easier with the other hand. That bear was hit double lung shoulder. No tracking required. Left handed.(I’m a right handed)Wow! I bought this book because I am about to go on a muskox hunt and wanted guidance on shot placement. I had seen it recommended on a hunter's discussion forum. I didn't expect much, perhaps a few black and white photos and brief text on low grade paper. When the book arrived, I was amazed. This is a high quality printing with all photos in color - both of the animals and of their surroundings. The pictures for illustrating shot placement are better than anything I have seen before. It has illustrations of each animal's skeleton, heart and lungs superimposed on a color photo. In addition there is another color photo with just simple dots showing where to place your shot. This is a must have for big game hunters. The quality is so high that it qualifies as a "coffee table" book (if your friends aren't squeamish about such things - if they are, you need to find new friends) :-)This book, may provide some useful information to someone who knows little, if anything about hunting. I say this with some reservation, because much of the information, especially that which is related to firearms, is the same old drivel, used by American "Gun Writers", to pander to the advertisers in their American gun magazines. Many of the rifle, and cartridge recommendations are absolutely hilarious. For the game animals that are hunted in all of the Western Hemisphere, and all of the Eastern Hemisphere, for that matter, with the possible exception of the "Big Five", a rifle chambered in something similar to a 30-06, with proper ammo, is all the rifle, that anyone would ever really need. A well placed shot, just above the heart, through both lungs, is the only shot, ever worth considering. All other shots, are little more than "iffy" shots used by "Trophy Hunters", whose primary motivation is killing a trophy. To be honest, I feel embarrassed for wasting money on a book, such as this. This is for North American game hunting what Kevin Robertson's book, "The Perfect Shot" was for African game. This book discusses all the most popular North American big game species, where they are hunted, the terraine where the hunt will occur, rifle types and calibers to consider as well as appropriate bullets to select for the various species. It details the best shot placement for each species. I would consider it a "must read" before hunting any North American big game animal you weren't completely familiar with.Excellent book with great anatomy pictures. I only wish there were description of shot placements especially for dangerous game when there was charge or head on shot involved. Most of us already know how to make a broad side shot. Other than that it's a very good book especially for newbies'.Boddington is an accomplished writer and sportsman. His book in this case however delivered less than expected. There wasn't near as much stalking, general hunting procedures, and anatomical diagrams information in Boddington's book as was presented in Kevin Robertson's book for Africa in the same vain. I refer to "The Perfect Shot" by Kevin Robertson, DVM & PH. I think Boddington copied Robertson's idea but really didn't measure up to Robertson. Boddington's book cost about 2/3 the price of Robertson's but delivered only 1/2 the value. I am not sorry I bought Boddington's book just that maybe I paid too much for it.I own two and have given a couple for gifts. Boddington always has Great read even if you may disagree a little or a lot- still stimulates thought and discussion around the camp fire!great book great quality, highly recommend
