My favorite vibes and xylophone player in a variety of settings on V-Disc recordings. Many tracks owe their influence to Woody Herman's Woodchoppers, a small group within Woody's larger band of which Red Norvo was a valuable addition. Indeed, Woody's clarinet can be heard to advantage on "Blowing Up A Storm" along with Woody and Red's fellow band mates Flip Phillips (also heard nicely on "Lagwood Walk"), and the great Bill Harris on trombone. Don't overlook "Sweet Georgia Brown": that's Benny Goodman on clarinet, and the incomparable Teddy Wilson on piano. I think Woody can also be heard on "Seven Come Eleven", with possibly Tony Scott on clarinet on other numbers. Mildred Bailey, who was married to Red at one time, is the vocalist on "Downhearted Blues" and a very plaintive "Old Rockin' Chair." The sessions were well-recorded and it's a real treat to have them available to us today.
