Description

Before radio and sound movies, early 20th century performers and lecturers traveled the nation providing entertainment and education to Americans thirsty for culture. These "chautauquas" brought politicians, activists, scholars, musical ensembles and theatrical productions to remote communities. A conduit for global perspectives and progressive ideas, these gatherings introduced issues like equal suffrage, prohibition and pure food laws to rural America. This book explores an overlooked yet influential movement in U.S. history, capturing the vagaries of speakers' and performers' lives on the road and their reception by audiences. Excerpts from lectures and plays portray a vibrant circuit that in a single summer drew 20 million in more than 9,000 towns.

I'm fascinated by the circuit Chautauqua movement of the early 1900s, and this book has been a joy to read. It's well-researched, filled with wonderful photos, and highly readable. The author obviously loves the subject. I find myself getting emotional over certain excerpts or depictions - because really it was a wonderful time in American history. I'm so grateful the author chose to write this book with such care and enthusiasm. (And a very big Thank You to the author for not disparaging - as other Chautauqua books do - the quirky and charming film by Elvis Presley, who was the inspiration guiding my initial interest in the subject of the circuit Chautauqua. If it weren't for his film, I'd never have discovered that important moment in history, or this book.)
