Description

A timely cannon blast at the right-wing media machine and how it subverts the principles of democratic representation Talk radio has done an end run around the voting populace. With Rush Limbaugh now the unofficial leader of the Republican Party and the far right controlling the five major syndicates, conservatives have a disproportionate voice in the medium—even in liberal cities such as New York, Boston, and San Francisco. Writing with his characteristic and incisive wit, Bill Press exposes the destructive power of Rush, Glenn Beck, Mark Levin, Sean Hannity, Michael Savage, Bill O’Reilly, and the other polarizing figures of talk radio who dominate 90% of the political airwaves today. Citing their own words as evidence, Press brilliantly makes the case that much of what is broadcast on radio and television today is—at best—distorted and partisan, and—at worst—lies, propaganda and bigotry sold by these talented modern-day pitchmen who have followings in the millions.

From the very beginning of the book, the author makes it clear that he is liberal and proud of it which I like because you can judge any bias from the beginning. The author even admits to a certain bias, which was refreshing. The author identifies the conservative talkers that spew forth toxic talk in rough order of their prominence on the radio/television and follows by describing the personality of the talker (Rush the bully, Glenn the crier, etc.). Finally, the author finishes each section with examples of the type of material that they pour out every day on their respective shows. The author covers the first tier talkers followed by the second and third tier talkers. It was interesting, as I had never heard of some of the individuals highlighted. Finally, the author finishes the book with a discussion of progressive talk radio, the Fairness Doctrine and what progressives can do to fight back against the conservative overload found on the radio today. This book was an easy read that identified who was who and what they believe. If you follow progressive web sites then you most likely know most of the information in the book. If, however, you are like me and do not spend much time on the web this will be enlightening. A recommended read if you are a progressive or centrist (like me) who is sick of the bile spilled onto the airwaves on a daily basis.
