Description

WINNER OF THE 2019 NATIONAL BOOK AWARD1919 was a world-shaking year. America was recovering from World War I and black soldiers returned to racism so violent that that summer would become known as the Red Summer. The suffrage movement had a long-fought win when women gained the right to vote. Laborers took to the streets to protest working conditions; nationalistic fervor led to a communism scare; and temperance gained such traction that prohibition went into effect. Each of these movements reached a tipping point that year. Now, one hundred years later, these same social issues are more relevant than ever. Sandler traces the momentum and setbacks of these movements through this last century, showing that progress isn’t always a straight line and offering a unique lens through which we can understand history and the change many still seek.

An incredibly interesting book about the events of 1919. 1919 has been called “the year our world began”. At only 184 pages with lots of pictures, it’s a great introduction and a easy read. Some books focus on specific events of 1919, such as "Red Summer". This book sums up the entire year.1919 EventsThe 18th Amendment and the Volstead Act establishing prohibition were passed in 1919. The 19th Amendment gave women the right to vote. The Communist take over of Russia triggered bombings and activist activity in the United States which resulted in a corresponding Red Scare here. 249 people were deported as Anarchists. The Summer of 1919 is called “Red Summer. More racial motivated riots and lynchings occurred than anytime in American history. Advancement in technology and returning vets resulted in labor issues and strikes. The United States experienced more labor strikes in one year than in any other year in its history. The Chicago White Sox threw the World Series. John Alcock and Arthur Brown were the first aviators to fly nonstop across the Atlantic. The second wave of the Spanish Flue continued to ravage America. The Boston Molasses flood killed 27 people and decimated Northern Boston. It was one factor leading to more stringent building codes. If you have a subscription to Newspapers.com, find a newspaper that covers both national and local issues. Browse the front pages. You won’t be bored.Note: The author writes a short editorial at the end of some chapters trying to connect historical events to current affairs. Some reviewers seem offended. It’s easily identifiable and separate from the historical content. A couple pages at most. If you don't like it, skip it. Don’t let it detract from the interesting historical presentation.
