Haven to Heaven depicts a family as they escape to a refugee camp in Thailand and await their chance to start anew in America. I highly recommend this book! There are many stories where crossing a threshold into unknown territory is depicted as an adventure. However, Kim Champa describes this ordeal, uncolored by sentimentality. Her pragmatic and rational perspective conveys the sense that sometimes, everyday perseverance and ingenuity can be just as heroic as a grand scheme or bold gesture.Diary entries written by her daughter Kasi add yet another layer to the story. The juxtaposition of perspectives sheds light on the conflicts and miscommunications within the Champa family. Kasi’s frustrations, though sometimes immature, are relatable and easy to understand. They show how we can hurt the ones we love, even when acting with the best of intentions. As the novel transitions from the refugee camp to the relative comforts of the United States, one would expect the trials of the Champa family to decrease in intensity. However, the story begins to shift to Kasi’s perspective, as her relationships are strained by a growing generational and cultural gap. As a child of an immigrant, I found many parallels to my own experiences.Haven to Heaven, at its core, is a story about navigating division. It touches on the division between men and women, between countries, and the division between generations, especially when a child grows up in an entirely different culture from their parents. With the current political climate as it relates to immigrants and refugees, this novel serves as a timely reminder: such divisions can be healed, if we take the time to listen to each other’s stories.
