This may be a landmark album for Gato of that I am not sure because there is a lot about Gato I do not know. However, for me in 1978-1979 it was a landmark album in my life. Late in my sophomore year in college I decided I would major in Spanish. The culture of Latino people, as well as the music, and the Spanish language had always been important for me. Today even more so because I now know that part of my heritage is Hispanic, Hispanic in this sense as in Spain, not Latin American as far as I know. Nonetheless, the has always been a cultural affinity between Spain and most parts of Latin America, however. there are distinct differences between Spain and Latin America, One can find this in the culture, the music, and the Spanish language as well. In my years in college and grad school I always concentrated my studies in Latin America. This album served as a gateway to what I refer to as the real music of Latin America. Though it is a mixture of Jazz and Latin music, the character of the music is distinctlyLatin American. There can be no doubt about that. It may not be as conventional as say, El Gran Combo (Puerto Rico) or Los Hermanos Flores (El Salvador) but the flavor of this album at least for me is distinctly Latino in every sense of the word in my humble opinion. This is not to say that ¡Caliente! doesn't have some of that same flavor, but that album as great as it is is a whole other world. Listening to Chapter One, I had many profound dreams about Latin America and what being a Spanish major really meant to me. In a word, the music is fantastic to the point of being almost like an out of body experience, or at least that is how it is for me. I highly recommend this cd to anyone who is fond of the music of América Latina.
