I picked up a copy of the first volume of this book, A Walk Across America, at Herrick Library in 1989, while I was a student at Alfred University. Bored and looking for something to read, it was the first random book I picked up. Well, that opened a door to a whole world for me! Peter Jenkins just happens to be an alumni of Alfred University, which is also where he starts out his journey across America. In the story, Peter even talks about having the same art teacher as me! Anyhoo, I was engaged and hooked from the start, and I'm thankful for reading it through. This story, which takes place a couple years after reaching the Gulf coast and meeting his wife, Barbara, starts out in Louisiana and tracks the pair's adventures out west. While not quite as fresh and engaging as Peter's original story, this tale does spin the mental wheels, allowing the reader to vicariously travel along on the Walk West.Addendum: I've since visited 47 of the continental 48 states (3 more to go!). This then further expanded my curiosity to the bigger world, my courage to communicate with people all over the world, leading to my becoming a Canadian resident, living there for 5 years, having helped start a grassroots school near Jinja, Uganda, being invited to live with a family for 1 month in Tunisia, and visiting other countries like Turkey, Egypt, Germany, Qatar, Spain, Morocco, France, and the UAE. I'm now planning to retire early, make a "skoolie", travel North America for a while, then advance to international travel.Enough about me. This description is only meant to convey the impact that Peter's stories have had on my life. It's a truly inspiring story that you can get lost in, especially if you have any overt (or closet!) adventurous spirit. Give it a try!
