Description

Global Jihad and America questions the assumption if Islamist terrorism, or "Global Jihad," poses the biggest threat to modern civilization in the East and West. It explores if Islamic and Western civilizations, being "incompatible" to each other, are destined to be at loggerheads. Consequently, the book argues that state-sponsored terrorism and proxy wars―not terrorist acts by "non-state actors"―will pose the biggest security threat to the world.  This study does not suggest that the world has already reached the cul-de-sac of its destiny with no point of return. Both America and the Muslim World can play important roles to avert the catastrophe. Meanwhile, the gap between the needy and the rich and powerful is widening. Throughout history, sections of the rich and powerful have manipulated wars in the name of peace and justice, religion and freedom. So the big question now is: with America and its allies waging a "war on terror and extremism" and their Muslim adversaries defending honor and religion, is a disaster looming?

Dr. Hashmi’s work is very informative because it provides different dimensions to terrorism that helps with understanding this complex issue of global jihad. His book gives historical information that is insightful to the genesis of the problems in the Arab region. It sheds light on America’s involvement in the region. Additionally, the book is a must for the person who is trying to get a deeper understanding on the divide within the Muslim community. As a student studying Homeland Security Dr. Hashmi’s book has allowed me to understand not just the what but the why and how the United States have taken on a task that can only be settled by the people of the region and not by U.S. military intervention. Consequently, the book supports the sentiments of General Collin Powell when he says, “if you break it, you own it.” Because we are now in the situation the British (the rightful owners of blame for the mess in the Arab world) were in after WWII - that is, looking for relief from the headache in the region. However, it will not be as easy or brief.Again, I applaud the informative work of Dr. Hashmi. I suggest it to anyone who desires a clear understanding on what has and is going on in the world of terrorism or Global Jihad to make this part of your library.
