Description

This collection of essays and documents, written and compiled by four distinguished historians, is an essential source book for anyone seeking to understand the causes, character, and consequences of American involvement in Vietnam. Through a wide variety of documents―including newly opened presidential papers, congressional debates, military reports, treaties, and newspaper articles―the authors trace the origins of the war back to pre–World War II attitudes and then proceed through the development of the "domino theory" and the policies of Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon to the fall of South Vietnam in 1975. Each of the editors has written an introductory essay to place the documents in heir historical context. These essays explore the controversial questions raised by Vietnam―such as whether each president understood what he was getting into, whether (as some now charge) the media and public opinion undermined America's ability to win the war, whether official statements were intended to mislead the American people, and, most fundamentally, why America was in Vietnam.

I am only going to post one review for all the books that I bought about the Vietnam War. I am a Vietnam Vet myself and I learned things that occurred when I was there that I didn't know about and I had a "very high" security clearance and I worked directly under General Westmoreland. So, if you are a history buff and wants to know the whole story, the good and the bad about war. I recommend all the books that I bought. Especially the We Were Brothers series by Gen. Moore and reporter Joe Galloway. Joe, M60, why? because one the first day Joe was on the front lines helped our forces fight the Viet Cong. He ended up getting all kinds of awards and recognition about his coverage of the war. He never lied about anything. Everything he and Gen. Moore said in all the books that they wrote together was based on nothing but the "TRUTH", no matter what. There is this retired Colonel on a Facebook site that I am a member of and he, too, has a quality of his writing about Vietnam, but, his is done in prose. Can you imagine talking about War in Prose??? Unreal. He makes you feel like you are right there taking on the Cong, very descriptive but its the way he tells it that make all the difference. well, Joe doesn't do it in prose, but, he is a professional reporter for a major newspaper. Of course now he has been retired for some time and lives along the East Coast (no, I will not say where). He wants his privacy, just like anyone that went to war. Sometimes you want to talk and other times no one could pay you enough to talk about some of the atrocities that you experienced. Joe tells about the good, the bad and the ugly. No holds barred. So, if you really want to know about the Vietnam War, I recommend all the ones that I purchased through Amazon. Most of them were used library books but they looked like they just came off the production line. Be prepared to learn about things you never dreamed of and wish you didn't after you did. Peace out!!!
