Description

America: Land of Principles and PromisesMany histories have been written about America, but few have drawn on the older, multi-volume works by early historians. Based on these older works, this book captures anew a more accurate picture of American history as it really happened. It was written over many years as an attempt to bring some of the lost yet exciting events, stories, and personalities from early America once again to the forefront of the history class. All history is biography, wrote Ralph Waldo Emerson, and within American history in particular we have re-discovered the stories of the great and good people who made it happen. The study of honorably-written history can change lives because it shows that goodness and truth ultimately prevail; it shows that standing for right--sometimes against terrible odds--leads to greatness; it shows that respect for the equal rights of others leads to greater advancement of mankind.America needs a rising generation who know and feel the important lessons history teaches. We hope this book will help them fulfill their manifest destiny, as America fulfills hers.

I have found this new history textbook to be an engaging and faithful review of how America came to be. It appears that the author has drawn from many of the older or original sources--which too often have been overlooked in modern history books that tend also to favor more secularized approaches. Peppered throughout the text are boxes they call Patriot Profiles that highlight many of the significant characters who left marks on history. One example is called Heroines of the Revolutionary War. I think another thoughtful bonus may be the brief stories--if you're old enough... something like Paul Harvey's The Rest of The Story-- such as one called Paying the Price: What Happened to the Signers of the Declaration of Independence. On that point, for those of us who know a little history, we understand that the Founders pledged their lives, their fortunes and their sacred honor, but I was surprised to learn from reading this that too many of them really did lose their lives and their fortunes--but surely retained their sacred honor. It is unique background like this that, to me, can inspire and teach the unvarnished truth of our founding fathers to the rising generation. The text pages have color pictures and graphics I can easily follow, but they aren't overloaded with neon colors and a dozen disparate things that attempt to bedazzle me into reading-- like some modern textbooks excel at. Good writing has always been a sufficient hook to draw me in--and retain my attention--and this history book seems to include that type of magnetism. Plenty of footnotes and long bibliography appear to have made the content well researched and documented.
