Description

Finding Home is the story of Brigitte Moore, born February 10, 1937 in what was Nazi Germany, to parents who did not fall under the spell of Hitler. For this they paid dearly. As Germany revved up for war, their comfortable middle class life was destroyed and they found themselves among the country's countless displaced. It is the story of the young refugee’s relentless struggle to find her place in that insane world…her search for home. It is the story of how, undaunted by one set back after another, Brigitte finally does find her home—shortly after her 21st birthday, half a world away from Germany and her family, all by herself—in the United States.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It's a memoir from a slice of the author's life as a German girl and her family during WWII. She's a skillful writer, although I believe this is her first published work. As you would guess from the title, all was not a bed of roses for the family and Brigitte. If I seem like I'm dancing around this review, I am, trying not to give anything away! I came away w/a much better understanding of how everyday Germans were affected by the war. They became in a way, secret agents for their family's and friends' safety & welfare and for Brigitte's ultimate success in getting to the US. Although I've read a few books from that time, this is the first memoir where I came away with a sense of knowing her family as friends. Readers' alert, once I began reading I didn't stop til the end. I hope Brigitte will keep on writing...I certainly shall keep on reading her books!
