I started reading this book and couldn't put it down. Tom traces his Irish heritage back to Ireland and discovers why he is who he is. He also writes about other contemporary revolutionaries and where does this drive to take on "underdog" or "lost" causes come from, and it's not just because somebody has to do it. -- it's inbred in Irish nature.Tom writes about Irish relatives in Wisconsin, his life growing up in Royal Oak, Michigan, his father abandoning him and his mother, loss of Irish identity in America due to British rule, the potato famine (it wasn't just a bad crop year), Northern Ireland, and other worthy causes he involved himself in.Tom really reveals himself in this novel. He may be remembered as an American Radical, or the Chicago 7 (which he talks about), but Tom Hayden is so much more -- a brilliant and true humanitarian and a Great American.
