Description

A powerful true story about a Muslim doctor's service to small-town America and the hope of overcoming our country's climate of hostility and fear.NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY PUBLISHERS WEEKLYIn 2013, Ayaz Virji left a comfortable job at an East Coast hospital and moved to a town of 1,400 in Minnesota, feeling called to address the shortage of doctors in rural America. But in 2016, this decision was tested when the reliably blue, working-class county swung for Donald Trump. Virji watched in horror as his children faced anti-Muslim remarks at school and some of his most loyal patients began questioning whether he belonged in the community. Virji wanted out. But in 2017, just as he was lining up a job in Dubai, a local pastor invited him to speak at her church and address misconceptions about what Muslims practice and believe. That invitation has grown into a well-attended lecture series that has changed hearts and minds across the state, while giving Virji a new vocation that he never would have expected. In Love Thy Neighbor, Virji relates this story in a gripping, unforgettable narrative that shows the human consequences of our toxic politics, the power of faith and personal conviction, and the potential for a renewal of understanding in America's heartland.

Definitely one of the best books that I’ve read in a very long time. Its narrative helps greatly to explain allot about some of the struggles in contemporary American society, particularly in relation to immigration, white supremacy, a collective failure as a nation to ‘practice what we preach’ (“In God We Trust” - our national motto printed on our money), and a failure to live up to who we are continually striving to become (“e pluribus unum” - meaning ‘out of many, one’).But to put things in perspective, we Americans have gone through difficult times before. On July 4th 1776, we ‘preached’ to all the world in the first paragraph of the Declaration of Independence, that “… all men are created equal …” yet failed to ‘practice’ such magnanimity until a terrible U.S. Civil War (1861-1865) occurred to shake our nation out of its complacency to finally and effectively eradicate Slavery.Knowing human nature, history, and the multiple life lessons taught by the various volumes of scripture from many faith traditions, I suspect or predict that those who read a descriptive synopsis of this book prior to purchasing it, and are motivated to purchase it and read it and find it helpful and transformative, will find themselves going from being a good person to a much better person; while those who read the same synopsis and wrongfully judge its informative and instructive narrative to be nothing more than rubbish, will probably, in all likelihood, be numbered among those within any society or culture who will be viewed by those better than themselves, as going from bad to progressively worse. So while this very good book’s specific narrative is a somewhat sad commentary of contemporary American culture at its worst, thankfully and simultaneously, this honestly and insightfully composed book is also filled with the eternally inspired message of hope and the triumph of good eventually overcoming evil.Congratulations to the author for the difficult task of penning such a painfully true story and sharing his struggle, and a hearty thank you to all those very good fellow Americans who faithfully stood by him and his family during his struggles, and for all those also who helped him see his personal narrative through to publication; you all have shown yourselves to be true Americans and genuine people of faith!Well done!
