Heartlands: A Gay Man's Odyssey Across America - LGBTQ+ Travel Memoir & Inspirational Journey for Pride Month Reading

I absolutely loved this book. Darrell Yates Rist roams across the country, from region to region, interviewing and even living temporarily with his interview subjects. He avoids the so-called gay ghettoes of the big cities like L.A.'s West Hollywood or New York's Greenwich Village. Instead, we meet gay oil workers in Alaska, a Mississippi drag queen, and gay cowboys at a rodeo, and many others. These people talk about what their lives are like. Inter-twined are musings by the author on his own personal history. I bought this book back in 1993 and it has survived quite a few house moves. I hope others will take the time to read this hugely rewarding book.
