Description

It should come as no surprise that one of the nation's oldest cities brims with spirits of those who lived and died in its hundreds of years of tumultuous history.Boston, Massachusetts, boasts countless stories of the supernatural. Many students at Boston College have encountered an unearthly hound that haunts O'Connell House to this day. Be on the watch for an actor who sits in on rehearsals at Huntington Theatre and restless spirits rumored to haunt Boston Common at night. From the Victorian brownstones of Back Bay to the shores of the Boston Harbor Islands, author Sam Baltrusis makes it clear that there is hardly a corner of the Hub where the paranormal cannot be experienced as he breathes new life into the tales of the long departed.

There is a wide range of approaches taken to the format of the Haunted America books by the various authors. Some authors have treated them more as lists of reports, while others told only their own stories as they visited reportedly haunted locales. Sam Baitrusis writes the reported paranormal experiences as stories, allowing you to experience them along with the subject. He provides just the right amount of history, without turning the book into a historical text. It would be impossible for a single person to visit the many reportedly haunted sites in Boston and interview hundreds of subjects. To provide a thorough & well-rounded collection of tales, Baltrusis sites other books on the subjects as well, giving the reader far more stories and information than he could using his experiences alone. I appreciated that he didn’t use the book to promote a tour company or paranormal investigative team, as some of the other authors in this series have done. He gives you the tantalizing accounts so you can indulge in the ghost stories, sprinkled with some historical research confirming or correcting their historical background. I feel this book is exactly what the Haunted America series should be.
