A general reader can gain a deep understanding of the rich and varied Buddhist tradition in the U.S. through this authoritative but thoroughly readable account of its history and development over time. Mitchell creates a lucid and succinct narrative of Buddhism from its earliest days through its divergence into Theravada, Mahayana and Vajrayana strands of belief and practice and its further evolution into the modern day. I was particularly struck by the efforts of young post-war Japanese-American Buddhists to conform to American values, what Mitchell cites as an example of “convergence.” The establishment of the Young Men’s Buddhist Association is one such manifestation. Simultaneously, and often in striking contrast, the Beat Generation of the 1950s were prone to appropriate Buddhism as part of their countercultural movement, what Mitchell terms “divergence.” In Mitchell’s telling, their co-existence vividly illustrates the ever-shifting and continually evolving life of Buddhism in America. The book stands apart for the absorbing story it tells. Mitchell includes clear and useful guides for the student as well as teacher.
