Description

The flourishing of America is the story of an inventive people with a mystic faith in technology, from the early settlers who used windmills as a way of getting water on the Great Plains to the electronic whiz kids of the Internet. Innovation, practical inventiveness, is the main force behind America's preeminence. But there is more to this extraordinary history. Harold Evans traces how the innovators have time and again proved to be democratizers, driven not by greed but by an ambition to be remembered. They translated the nation's political ideals into economic reality.

You want the full sized hardcover experience with 500 illustrations, which serves more as a full-on coffee table book, or a prestigious looking book for the bookshelf. The second edition is strictly a textbook still packed with the same great information and narrative, just missing the illustrations. I accidentally purchased the second edition thinking it would have the illustrations. Anybody NOT interested in the illustrations should purchase the second edition which is a smaller (but still hefty) paperback edition ideal for people strictly doing research.Either way, all the information presented about the various major innovators (both well known and lesser known) throughout American history is excellent. This is the best book for the topic, but the first edition is a whole other experience..
