Description

This volume in the Images of America series preserves through vintage photographs the gardens that, by their very nature, are impermanent. Although Charleston's contemporary gardens are well documented in other sources, those of past generations are depicted here, reminding readers that Charleston was primarily a city of family homes where life was enjoyed in the garden. From more traditional formal designs to surprisingly informal yards, these 19th and 20th-century photographs detail gardening life from bygone eras. Beyond the peninsula, informal country gardens were a small but important part of working farms, and summer cottage yards were intended for recreation and relaxation.

Historic Charleston Gardens really isn't so much about gardens as it is about the remarkable flavor of Charleston's community in bygone days. It is after all--a libretto of the old south echoing through the narrow alleyways and broad streets to melodies of Gullah spirituals sung by myriad black faces. The authors capture through long forgotten tin types and ancient black and white photographs the colorful spectrum of life in the city they so dearly love. And in so doing they have helped preserve for posterity the sultry street life flowing through the city including its many wood frame and other vulnerable structures that have mostly vanished with time. From young boys riding tiny goat carts along dusty lanes to the stately and quietly enduring mansions reposing along Meeting Street, this volume, largely set in the Civil War, epoch invites you to escape to a hidden garden where the splashes of vibrant color offer solace and sanctuary.
