Description

Since Ronald Reagan left office -- and particularly after his death -- his shadow has loomed large over American politics: Republicans and many Democrats have waxed nostalgic, extolling the Republican tradition he embodied, the optimism he espoused, and his abilities as a communicator. This carefully calibrated image is complete fiction, argues award-winning journalist William Kleinknecht. The Reagan presidency was epoch shattering, but not -- as his propagandists would have it -- because it invigorated private enterprise or made America feel strong again. His real legacy was the dismantling of an eight-decade period of reform in which working people were given an unprecedented sway over our politics, our economy, and our culture. Reagan halted this almost overnight. In the tradition of Thomas Frank's What's the Matter with Kansas?, Kleinknecht explores middle America -- starting with Reagan's hometown of Dixon, Illinois -- and shows that as the Reagan legend grows, his true legacy continues to decimate middle America.

I thank William Kleinknecht from the bottom of my heart for this meticulously researched, beautifully written, thoroughly - if a bit unsettlingly - entertaining, and long overdue book! For those who are too young, too (willfully) misinformed or just too generally deluded to form an accurate picture of the Reagan years and the Reagan legacy - here is the book that pulls back the curtain on the old wizard. In a sense, George W. Bush was just the cherry on a sundae; and his father was the whipped cream. But the sundae itself- all of the ice cream, the nuts, the chocolate sauce, or what-have-you that went into making up the diabolical concoction which the Bush family so suitably finished off..... all of that was created by the utterly immoral and unscrupulous Reagan administration.I so well remember how hated and reviled that man and his ludicrous wife Nancy were during the first years of their sway. But then he arose from an assassination attempt. And the huge media conglomerates, the corporate giants that he signed the legislation to create, the monsters that destroy our public discourse and are now too powerful to ever be put asunder, began the canonization of Saint Ronnie.
